YouTube tutorial I recorded to explain how to use Smore.com

Smore.com is a wonderful on-line poster website I will certainly use again with my different classes. You can embed sound, video, and other links to make for an interesting tool to use for in class or on-line presentation.

Here is an example Smore.com poster I presented to my EFL class in South Korea to explain what was expected of them, when they worked on their own projects advertising a country of their own choosing. Smore.com On-line Poster Advertisement Tutorial (& Soundcloud) from Ron Genech

Smore.com is a wonderful on-line poster website I recently used with my EFL students in South Korea. Their assignment was to present an on-line travel poster, advertising a country of their choosing. With SoundCloud, they were able to record their voices, describing their country. They then presented their travel posters to the class in person. Some students also elected to include short video clips in their presentations. Speech Accent Archive, ManyThings.org, Vocaroo.com - 3 good English Pronunciation tools.

The Speech Accent Archive is a pretty interesting site for students to hear people from all over the world read the same paragraph. I used it recently, when I taught a class of Korean students preparing for the TOEIC Speaking Test. Manythings.org is also a useful website for ESL / EFL teaching. Finally, Vocaroo.com is a good tool for students to record their voices, so they can hear their pronunciation and realize what areas of pronunciation they need to improve.

Purpose Games - A fun vocabulary review website.

Purpose Games is a fun website to practice vocabulary. It's easy for teachers to create Purpose Games. Just upload a picture , and enter the vocabulary. It's fun to race against the clock. A link to a game I created to study Korean vocabulary for weather is on the last slide.

Pixiclip and Vocaroo - Two really useful teaching tools, made even better when combined !

Pixiclip is a really cool and easy to use interactive whiteboard. You can upload a picture,then doodle and draw on the screen. You can also record audio or video. However, IF you are like me, and you have a "face for radio", you may want to stick with the audio, instead of video, ha ha. Vocaroo is a free on-line audio recording site. Students can record their voices and email the results to you. I recently used both tools to teach a TOEIC Speaking test prep class. Quizizz - An even better version of the Kahoot review game (in my opinion)

Quizizz is very similar to the Kahoot game I reviewed earlier in this blog, BUT it seems to give better feedback to the students and teachers. The correct and incorrect answers are revealed to the student at the end of the game, which is something Kahoot doesn't do ... to my knowledge. On the last slide of this PPT, there is a link to a Quizizz game I created . Try it out and see for yourself. Quizizz is a lot of fun and a useful tool for the classroom!

Edueto.com - Youtube - Screencastify

I created some activities for my TOEIC students on Edueto.com, recorded a tutorial using Screencastify, and uploaded it to Youtube. Edueto is a pretty useful tool for teachers. I highly recommend it, so check it out !

Fotobabble - A good speaking tool for my ESL / EFL students

Fotobabble allows you to upload a picture and record audio , for up to one minute. For this assignment, I uploaded a picture of the four seasons I obtained from Google (usage rights: free to use or share). I then spoke about my favorite season (Spring ) and listed the reasons WHY Spring is my favorite season. I am presently teaching a TOEIC Speaking Test prep class. For a few of the questions, students will have to respond to a question asking their opinion. They will have to support their opinion with reasons and speak into a microphone, for less than a minute. So, this assignment will be good practice for them. I will ask my students to create a FREE Fotobabble account, upload the picture and speak for one minute.

Voicethread - a good practice tool for the TOEIC Speaking Test

Voicethread is a tool I recently came across that looks promising for my EFL English class at my University. I am presently teaching a TOEIC Speaking Test Prep class, and one of the questions on the test involves describing a picture. Students need to describe what is happening in a picture, and also make speculations about what is happening in a picture. Voicethread will be a good way for me to assess my student's punctuation and descriptive skills. I'm excited to see what other ways I can use it in the classroom.

Welcome to My Teaching Blog !

Thanks for visiting. I am Ron Genech and I am presently teaching English at a University in South Korea. I have lived in South Korea for approximately 3 and 1/2 years. I am also a certified teacher in the USA, where I am certified to teach Social Studies, Biology , Earth Science and General Science in the state of Pennsylvania. In fact, one reason for this blog is to satisfy a requirement, for an on-line course I am enrolled in, back in Pennsylvania. The course is called, 'Building an On-line Environment'. Another reason for the creation of this blog is that it will be a great place to 'experiment' and collect lessons incorporating new technologies. So, please DO check back periodically.
